Readers Engage in Tax Debate

Our recent cover story "Big Tax Increase Looms" (uschamber.com, May 2008) examined how small business tax rates would go up if Congress allows the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts to expire. The story generated a number of responses at www.uschambermagazine.com.

"All chambers around the country should mount a huge swell of support of local business owners to fight to keep the current tax structure in place."
-Jeffrey H. Massey, CFP, Lincoln, RI

"I'm a small business owner and am in favor of repealing the cuts. It's time we all faced the fact that we need to pay for what we get from our government."
-Bob Cinningham, Santa Barbara, CA

"I am already paying more than my 'fair share.' It's time for rollback, not another tax increase!"
-Dan Harris, Elmhurst, IL

"The benefits of the tax cuts undeniably accrue to a relatively small population of very wealthy individuals and do nothing for the rest of us. My personal taxes (and I own my business) rise every year as my income grows-no discernible benefit to me."
-John Gilbert, Concord, NH

"The greatest growth this country has ever had is when we reduce taxation all around. Unemployment goes down, consumer spending and production increase, and on and on."
-Scott Doerfler, Homewood, IL
